What is a usability and accessibility audit?
A usability and accessibility audit checks how easy a website or app is to use and whether people with disabilities can use it.
It combines expert usability review, automated scanning and assistive technology testing against WCAG 2.2, and delivers prioritised fixes mapped to each success criterion.
The Problem

If Customers Can't Use It, They Can't Buy It

A site can be fully functional and still fail the people trying to use it. Are these risks on your radar?

Ready for tightening accessibility laws?

The European Accessibility Act now applies to many digital products and services sold in the EU, alongside existing obligations such as the UK Equality Act and public sector accessibility regulations. Many organisations are not yet compliant.

Shutting out customers without realising?

Around one in five people live with a disability, yet large-scale studies consistently find detectable WCAG failures on the vast majority of websites, shutting many customers out of key journeys.

Relying on automated scans for compliance?

Automated scanners only catch a portion of accessibility issues and cannot judge usability at all. Teams that rely on them miss barriers that stop real users completing tasks, costing conversions and increasing support demand.

A product can be fully functional and still fail its users. Confusing navigation, unclear content and inconsistent design frustrate customers and drive them to competitors. At the same time, around one in five people live with a disability, and many more experience temporary or situational impairments. Products that are not accessible exclude a significant share of potential customers and can expose organisations to legal and regulatory risk. TCTG's Usability & Accessibility Audits assess websites, web applications and mobile applications against recognised usability principles and WCAG 2.2 accessibility requirements. Combining expert manual assessment, automated accessibility testing and assistive technology validation, we identify barriers that can prevent users from completing their goals and provide practical, prioritised recommendations to create accessible, inclusive and intuitive digital experiences.

Key Features

What's Included In Usability & Accessibility Audits?

Expert manual review, automated scanning and real assistive technology testing against WCAG 2.2 and recognised usability principles.

Heuristic usability evaluation

Expert evaluation of digital experiences against recognised usability principles, identifying issues with navigation, consistency, clarity, feedback, error prevention and ease of use.

User journey analysis

Assessment of critical user journeys such as registration, search, product discovery, checkout and form submission to identify usability and accessibility barriers that may prevent users from completing their goals.

WCAG 2.2 conformance audit

Assessment against applicable WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA success criteria, covering accessibility barriers across content, navigation, interaction, forms and dynamic components, with targeted Level AAA assessment where required.

Assistive technology testing

Manual accessibility testing using screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack, together with keyboard-only navigation and other relevant assistive technologies based on the target platform

Automated accessibility scanning

Automated scanning using accessibility tools such as axe, WAVE and Lighthouse to identify potential accessibility issues efficiently, followed by expert manual validation because automated tools alone cannot identify all accessibility barriers.

Visual and content checks

Evaluation of colour contrast, text resizing, zoom and reflow, focus visibility, alternative text, headings, links, buttons, labels and content structure to identify barriers affecting users with different accessibility needs.

Accessible Forms & Error Handling

Assessment of form labels, instructions, required fields, error identification, error messages, validation and recovery to ensure users can successfully complete forms and transactions using different interaction methods.

Dynamic Content & Interactive Components

Accessibility assessment of dynamic components such as modals, accordions, carousels, menus, tabs, pop-ups and live content, including keyboard access, focus management, accessible names and state changes.

Cross-device and responsive review

Assessment of usability and accessibility across desktop, tablet and mobile experiences, including responsive behaviour, keyboard navigation, touch targets, focus management and content reflow.

After Cross-device and responsive review

Re-testing of previously identified accessibility issues and affected components after changes to confirm fixes remain effective and that new accessibility barriers have not been introduced.

Moderated usability sessions (optional)

Task-based usability sessions with representative users to identify real-world usability barriers and validate whether key journeys are understandable, efficient and accessible. Where appropriate, sessions can include users with disabilities.

Accessibility Statement Review & Guidance

Review and guidance for accessibility statements, including clear communication of accessibility coverage, known limitations, contact mechanisms and ongoing improvement plans.

Our Approach

A clear, structured process from scope to sign-off.

1. Plan

Define the assessment scope, target platforms, key user journeys, applicable accessibility standards, assistive technologies and testing approach.

2. Assess

Perform automated scans, expert manual testing, usability evaluation and assistive technology testing across agreed pages, journeys, components or applications.

3. Analyse & Prioritise

Validate findings, remove false positives, map issues to applicable WCAG success criteria, assess user impact and prioritise remediation based on severity and business impact.

4. Report

Provide a structured report containing findings, evidence/screenshots, affected locations, WCAG mapping, severity, user impact and practical remediation recommendations.

5. Support

Support development and product teams with clarification of findings, remediation guidance and accessibility best practices throughout the fixing process.

6. Re-audit

Re-test resolved issues and perform accessibility regression testing to confirm fixes and identify any new or recurring accessibility issues.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a usability and an accessibility audit?
Usability looks at how easy a product is for everyone to use, such as navigation, clarity and flow. Accessibility checks that people with disabilities can use it, measured against WCAG 2.2. We combine both in a single audit.
Which standard do you audit against?
WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA as standard, which aligns with EN 301 549 and the European Accessibility Act. Targeted Level AAA checks can be included where required.
Isn't an automated accessibility tool enough?
No. Automated tools are useful for speed, but they only detect part of the problem. Expert manual testing and assistive technology testing are needed to find the barriers that matter most to real users.
Do you test with real users or users with disabilities?
Yes, as an option. Moderated, task-based usability sessions can be added, including participants with disabilities, to validate findings in real-world use.
Will we receive an accessibility certificate?
There is no official WCAG certification. We provide an independent conformance report mapped to each WCAG criterion, which you can use as evidence, plus guidance on writing your accessibility statement.
