What is a Shopify performance audit?
A Shopify performance audit tests the parts of a Shopify store that the merchant controls:
The theme, apps, APIs, integrations and headless front end – to find what will slow the store down at peak. It combines Core Web Vitals analysis, app-impact testing and load testing, all within Shopify's platform terms.
The Problem

Shopify Scales. Your Theme, Apps and Integrations Might Not.

Shopify takes care of its own infrastructure - but most peak-time slowdowns start in the layers you control. Sound familiar?

Hidden slowdowns when traffic peaks?

BFCM, flash sales and product drops bring traffic far above normal levels. Slow pages, failed add-to-cart calls and lagging integrations at these moments lose sales when they matter most.

Store slowed down by app and theme bloat?

Merchants often add many apps over time, each injecting its own scripts. Page speed and Core Web Vitals degrade gradually, and it is hard to see which app or theme change is responsible.

Assuming "Shopify handles it"?

Shopify scales its own platform, but merchants cannot see server metrics, load-test checkout or stress-test the storefront. Many assume "Shopify handles it" while their apps, middleware and headless front ends are the real weak points.

Shopify runs, hosts and scales the core platform for every merchant, so merchants cannot tune servers, databases or checkout capacity. Store performance still depends heavily on what the merchant controls: theme code, installed apps and their scripts, Shopify Functions, headless front ends, middleware and ERP/OMS integrations. TCTG's Shopify Performance Audit focuses on exactly these layers. We combine Core Web Vitals and theme analysis, app-impact testing, API and integration load testing, and low-rate storefront testing where Shopify authorises it. This shows what will slow the store down at peak and gives the customer clear, prioritised fixes, all within Shopify's platform terms.

Key Features

What's Included In A Shopify Performance Audit?

Everything we test across your theme, apps, APIs, integrations and headless front end – within Shopify's platform terms.

Theme performance audit

Review of Liquid theme code, templates and sections using Theme Inspector for Chrome to find slow-rendering templates, heavy loops and unnecessary code.

Core Web Vitals analysis

Measurement of LCP, INP, CLS and TTFB on key templates (home, collection, product, cart) using Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, CrUX and the Shopify Web Performance dashboard.

App impact assessment

With / without testing of installed apps on a preview theme to quantify the page-speed cost of each app's scripts, app blocks and embeds.

Image, script & asset review

Review of image sizing and formats, JavaScript and CSS weight, third-party tags, fonts and lazy-loading to reduce page weight and improve load times.

Storefront & Admin API testing

Performance testing of Storefront API (GraphQL) and Admin API usage within Shopify's published rate limits, checking query cost, throttling (429) handling and client back-off.

Headless storefront load testing

Full load testing of customer-owned headless front ends (e.g. Hydrogen on Oxygen, Next.js on Vercel), within the hosting provider's terms.

Middleware & integration load testing

Load testing of ERP, OMS, PIM and iPaaS connectors, including replaying order and inventory webhooks at peak rates to confirm they keep up.

Authorised storefront load testing

Capped storefront load testing only with Shopify's written authorisation (via Shopify Plus). If authorisation is not granted, low-rate baselines are used instead.

Checkout timing (single-user)

Single-user synthetic checkout timing on a development store with a test gateway. Shopify Checkout cannot be load-tested by merchants.

Production baseline monitoring

Low-rate synthetic journeys (browse to checkout start) and real-user data review to capture a live performance baseline during the audit window.

Flash sale & peak readiness

Peak-event runbook and flash-sale checklist, with coordination guidance for Shopify Plus merchants ahead of major launches and BFCM.

Our Approach

A clear, structured process from scope to sign-off.

1. Engage & Authorise

Agree scope, targets and test windows; request Shopify written authorisation for any storefront load; confirm app-vendor consent and bot-protection settings.

2. Discover & Baseline

nventory the theme, apps, integrations and headless setup; review the Web Performance dashboard, API throttle history and webhook volumes; baseline Core Web Vitals.

3. Model & Plan

Split the workload into Shopify-hosted (authorised, capped) and customer-owned (full load) traffic; set targets, typically 2x previous peak.

4. Build

Create theme/Ajax cart scripts, Storefront API scripts for headless, and a middleware/webhook replay harness, with development-store test data.

5. Execute

Run authorised storefront tests at capped rates and full load against apps, middleware and the headless host, monitoring 429s and APM.

6. Analyse & Report

Identify theme, app, API and integration bottlenecks, quantify their impact and prioritise fixes.

7. Retest & Sign-off

Retest fixes delivered within the agreed window and hand over the readiness verdict and flash-sale runbook.
Deliverables

What You Get

Every engagement ends with practical, evidence-based outputs your teams can act on straight away.

  • Rules of Engagement & authorisation pack – Agreed scope, traffic caps, stop criteria and contacts, including Shopify written authorisation and app-vendor consents.
  • Shopify performance risk assessment – Risk-rated view of the theme, apps, APIs, middleware and headless host, showing where performance could fail at peak.
  • Test strategy & workload model – Split model covering Shopify-hosted (capped) and customer-owned traffic, with journeys, rates and acceptance criteria.
  • Reusable test scripts & data – Version-controlled k6 scripts for storefront, Storefront API and middleware, handed over for future use.
  • Core Web Vitals & app impact report – Template-level LCP, INP, CLS and TTFB findings, including the measured page-speed cost of each app, with prioritised fixes.
  • Load test results & findings register – Results for authorised storefront scope and customer-owned components, with each finding logged with evidence, impact, owner and fix.
  • Readiness assessment & remediation backlog – RAG readiness verdict for customer-owned components plus an effort-vs-impact prioritised backlog.
  • Executive summary & flash-sale runbook – One-page verdict and key risks, plus a runbook covering monitoring, alert thresholds, roles and contingency actions.
  • Retest evidence – Before/after comparison confirming the impact of fixes delivered within the retest window.

Support

Frequently asked questions

Shopify scales automatically,  why do we need a performance audit?
Shopify scales its core platform, but not your theme, apps, headless front end or integrations. These customer-owned layers cause most peak-time slowdowns and are exactly what the audit tests.
Can you load test our Shopify checkout?
No. Shopify prohibits interference with its checkout without express written authorisation. We measure checkout with single-user synthetic tests on a development store and load-test everything around it, such as middleware and order syncs.
Do we need Shopify's permission?
Only for load against the Shopify-hosted storefront, which we request on your behalf via Shopify Plus support. Front-end, theme and app-impact audits, and testing of your own middleware and headless hosting, need no approval.
Will testing affect our live store or customers?
No. Storefront testing only runs at authorised, capped rates in agreed windows, with clear stop criteria. Heavier load runs against development stores and customer-owned components, and test orders are never placed on the live store.
How long does an audit take and what do you need from us?
A Rapid Health Check takes 1–2 weeks; a full Peak Readiness Audit takes 6–10 weeks including authorisation lead time. We need collaborator access, theme and app details, analytics and peak history, and access to any middleware.
