Increasing E-Commerce Efficiency and Performance: Phase Eight and Cloudinary Case Study

Many retail brands may recognise that optimising digital assets and streamlining asset management processes are pivotal for improving user experience and operational efficiency. This case study demonstrates how The Commerce Team Global successfully implemented Cloudinary’s solution for Phase Eight, a renowned women's fashion retailer, to address these challenges and enhance their e-commerce performance.

Understanding Digital Asset Optimisation and Management

Digital asset optimisation involves refining the way visual and multimedia content is stored, accessed, and displayed to enhance user interaction and site performance. In the e-commerce landscape, optimising digital assets means ensuring that images are adapted to the device and screen resolution of the viewer without compromising quality. This process includes:

  • Dynamic Image Compression: Adjusting compression to maintain quality while minimising file sizes, tailored to the viewer's device.
  • Responsive Delivery: Automatically modifying image sizes and formats to suit different devices.

Streamlining asset management processes, on the other hand, focuses on simplifying the methods and tools used to handle these digital assets effectively. It encompasses:

  • Automation of Image Transformations: Implementing tools that automatically resize, crop, and enhance images based on pre-set parameters, thereby reducing the need for manual intervention.
  • Centralised Management: Consolidating all digital assets into a single, accessible platform that provides real-time updates and easy integration with other systems.

Challenges Faced by Phase Eight

Phase Eight is part of the TFG Group London and a UK leader in high-quality women’s clothing. They were encountering significant hurdles in their digital asset management and website performance. The existing solution, Salesforce Commerce Cloud Digital Imaging Service (DIS), was providing adequate service but did not fully optimise content delivery across different devices and screen resolutions. This gap was leading to sub-optimal loading times and user experience, which in turn affected customer satisfaction and conversion rates.

The Results

The Commerce Team Global, aiming to improve Phase Eight's digital ecosystem, identified Cloudinary as the technology of choice to respond to our client’s challenges. Once the POC phase ended and all benefits were demonstrated, our clients decided to go ahead with the integration of Cloudinary with their existing systems. Cloudinary is an end-to-end image- and video-management solution for websites and mobile apps, covering everything from image and video uploads, storage, manipulations, optimisations to delivery. This technology provided a more sophisticated approach to image optimisation, delivering images that were not only high quality but also appropriately sized and formatted according to the user's device, thereby reducing unnecessary data loads.

The results were immediate and impactful:

  • Enhanced User Experience: Faster loading times and better interaction quality increased customer engagement and reduced bounce rates.
  • Increased Efficiency: Automated image management freed resources, enhancing customer service and market expansion capabilities.
  • Scalability: The Cloudinary solution enables efficient management of a growing volume of digital assets without increasing overhead.

Thanks to the expertise of our Technical Team, The Commerce Team Global was able to deliver an optimised shopping experience for our clients. This case study not only underscores the importance of advanced digital asset management in modern retail but also highlights the successful partnership with Cloudinary and sets a benchmark for future projects.
